Coffee Shop AU

COFFEE SHOP
An absolute staple. No matter what side of the counter you're on, the coffee shop is the absolute center of your life. Whether you're a barista, or just camped out in the corner with the good outlet while you write your novel. Perhaps you just really want to tell the cute person behind the counter that you've loved them since they gave you that coffee six months ago. Or you're overwhelmed with orders and nothing is going right. For good or bad, everyone needs their caffiene.

And should any of those groups of people cause an issue, the regular but exhausted brunette who just parked herself in a stool at the counter would be delighted in helping deal with them. Preferably with a fork, or really any silverware that might be within reach when needed.

"Please tell me you have pie left, Angie." Peggy knows there's coffee because it's the first thing she smelled when she walked in. Though it's not the reason why she came here instead of heading to any of the nearby coffee spots. She might have memorized a certain waitress's schedule. Peggy just hopes with the way she feels there's enough coffee to keep her awake the rest of the night.

"Wouldn't be much of an all-night diner if we ran out of pie." Not that it was actually a diner, even calling it a cafe was generous, it was a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop, the kind with a decades-old neon sign in the window proclaiming they had the 'city's best cup of coffee' without anything to back up the claim.

"We've got cherry, apple, think there's still a slice of lemon cream, chocolate banana and about a half ton of strawberry, the real shiny kind." Which meant it was probably more gelatin glaze than actual strawberry, but that was to be expected in a place like this.

"Nonsense. I'm sure you see a lot of patrons in here for your..." Well, nothing else probably. No point in lying. The pies were a staple as to why people came in here at all hours of the night instead of finding somewhere a little more modern. The coffee wasn't bad, per se, but it went down easier with a slice of pie.

Especially, "Chocolate banana, please." Stretching out her arms across the counter Peggy's forehead comes to rest on the cool top momentarily. "And an entire pot of coffee if you'd be so kind. I've a long night ahead of me and I've already had a long day." A groan at the realization she still had to go back and deal with Jack.

"Believe it or not, some people do come for the coffee." Of which she was already pouring a mug for the other woman, sliding a dish of creamers and one of the sugar containers over to where she could reach before turning to plate a slice of pie, "And the eggs ain't half bad either.

She set the plate down, added a fork and just leaned against the counter with one hip, arms folding loose and comfortable across her chest, "So, Queen Victoria," One of many nicknames she'd used for the other woman, apparently just waiting for one to be vehemently rejected, "Am I ever going to get the story about why you're on this side of the pond? Or should I just keep pretending you're some James Bond type and my life's actually a lot more interesting than it is?"

Like a cat at the sound of a can opening Peggy's head immediately snaps up and to attention when the coffee is poured, nostrils flaring. It's not tea but it'll do. "Do they really?" She asks incredulously, hands possessively wrapping around the mug to pull to her face in case the other decided she wasn't worthy of the cup for that response.

Pursing her lips around the rim to blow at the steam her brow slowly arches in response to the nickname. She may never admit it but she enjoys the way Angie attempts to get a different reaction out of her every time. All it earns the other brunette is a snort before she dumps a ungodly amount of sugar into the mug. "What if I told you I was, in fact, an agent for a top-secret allied agency, and after the war I was reassigned here?" She asks curiously, nothing in her tone indicating she were joking.

She actually gave that one some consideration, "You know, I'd actually believe it coming from you and not from Stan." She cocked her head towards one of the small tables near the front window and the gentleman sitting there with the newspaper, maybe the same age as Angie's oldest brother, "He hasn't tried that one recently though, tried it the first couple times he was in here."

She shrugged one shoulder, "Not sure what story he's going with these days he's usually in earlier than my shift starts."

"Stan?" She's quick to ask, head poking up from stirring the spoon inside her mug to glance over her shoulder at the gentleman in reference. The man doesn't look familiar, as far as she's concerned, but that isn't much to go on. The fact he's open and honest about being an agent points to it being nothing she actually has to concern herself with.

Unless of course that's exactly why he acknowledges he's an agent? Ultimate cover story hiding in plain sight.

Nonsense, that's outrageous.

With a shrug and wrinkle of her nose, Peggy turns her attention back to Angie and the coffee. "While I'm glad you'd trust me rather than the gentleman who clearly lacks the finesse it takes to be an agent, I am a little hurt you don't believe me." Peggy frowns a moment before bringing the mug to her lips to take a sip. "What is it you think brought me here, then?" She asks from around the rim of the mug, entirely curious what grand story Angie might have concocted up.

"Excuse me?" She planted her hands on her hips, trying not to laugh, "I said I believe you more than I believe him, which means I believe you at least a little bit."

She shrugged then, relaxing once more, "And besides, you at least came up with some kind of background unlike Mr. Agent over there." Really he was nice enough, quiet, always left a tip, didn't try to get anyone's number, and she didn't mind having him there even with his odd choice of job description.

Her smile had returned, "So either you've just got a good attention to detail, or you're telling the truth and probably hoping I won't believe it."

"A little bit?" She manages to keep from laughing and instead goes serious. It's likely all for the better that Angie doesn't completely believe her. But, if Angie ever finds herself doing so fully, Peggy can say she at least was honest, now. "Well then, by all means, please accept my apologizes." Scooting closer to the counter before taking a stab at the pie she watches Angie curiously.

"Considering you believe me a little, what's keeping you from believing me entirely?" She presses, shoving the slice of pie into her mouth and talking around it. She's starving, alright. Manners be damned. "You don't strike me as the type to believe only men can be agents or spies."

"Oh lord no." She replied, shaking her head and looking mildly affronted that Peggy might think something like that of her, "We're better at it, generally speaking, I know about the whole thing with the Girl Guides."

She waved a hand in front of her face to brush that away, instead just answering the question, "And it's the fact that you're actually telling me, I always thought that kind of thing was supposed to be super hush-hush, need-to-know basis kind of thing."
