COFFEE SHOP

An absolute staple. No matter what side of the counter you're on, the coffee shop is the absolute center of your life. Whether you're a barista, or just camped out in the corner with the good outlet while you write your novel. Perhaps you just really want to tell the cute person behind the counter that you've loved them since they gave you that coffee six months ago. Or you're overwhelmed with orders and nothing is going right. For good or bad, everyone needs their caffiene.

[ It's like every Les Mis modern AU ever! Grantaire has tattoos! He may or may not be a student, if he is he never goes to lectures! He wears a green beanie! He drinks only black coffee! He's wearing a nametag that just has "R" written on it!

He's terrible at making coffee, please don't actually let him make you anything he's only covering for a few weeks. But definitely ask him why he has skulls all down one arm and latin poetry and flowers down the other. Also ask if he's ever brushed his hair or if he deliberately makes it like that.
But don't ask why he smells like wine, that's too much. ]

[He's stopping in for a cup in the middle of working a double shift down at the station. Better give him the extra shot of espresso....or three. Poor guy looks dead on his feet and could likely use it.]

[Lurine is one of those people that's always a step or two ahead of everyone else when it comes to what is considered popular. So of course she's discovered the fabulously little niche coffehouse before all the hipsters descend on it like a swarm of mosquitoes. She orders the most expensive drinks on the menu, always makes sure to tip, and spends her time in one of the rather comfortable chairs sipping slowly while she sizes up everyone around her.]

[You're not really a college student unless you're mainlining coffee like it's about to go out of style. Ivar's no exception, though he's never uses it to cram in more study time like most do. He's brilliant enough just to skate on by with little effort, much to the chagrin of his fellow students.

Instead, he comes purely to people-watch, deciding if he wants to try and play nice with anyone by acting like an actual human being instead of some wild predator like a wolf. Usually he does, and on the rare occasion he doesn't, he can usually be asked to leave without too much trouble coming forth.]

[The most pressing question is why someone who should smell like (a) nothing in particular or (b) coffee smells like wine, though.

Just kidding. The most pressing question is actually why the means of production have been so firmly cemented out of the hands of the people to the extent that the underlying goodness of revolutionary politics has been able to be sullied and marginalized into the caste of 'unpatriotic' when really, a person who loves their country should essentially be constantly willing to die for the advancement of their fellow man into something like stable parity with those seeking his oppression.

But the right now question is:] S--even cups, please.

[There were probably fancy drinks demanded. However, electing Enjolras to acquire caffeine for them means everyone gets a small black coffee and likes it (or, more likely, winds up going back to order their own).]

[ Grantaire has been trained in how to make coffee. That is something someone showed him how to do. He is technically qualified to exchange that coffee for money. This very fact reinforces his belief that everything is hopeless and the heat death of the universe cannot come fast enough.

And yet he takes pity on his fellow man. ]

You're sure? The coffee I make is pretty shit. I wouldn't recommend seven cups of it.

[ Like, this is a stunningly handsome fellow man right here. He doesn't deserve even one cup of Grantaire-made coffee. ]

[He mainlines caffeine like it's his lifeblood, and don't let an intimidating appearance fool you: he's not drinking it black or scalding. Bring on the cold brews and the flavored syrups. It's a hipster nightmare. Never mind the fact that he's probably hogging one of the few electric outlets to charge his phone.]

[ Tim's a fourth-year French/German double major. He lives for the café vibe, so expect to catch him there most days, either working on his thesis or tutoring. He has papers everywhere, but all of the other tables are probably occupied and he'd be glad to share, sooooo. ]

[Can't actually taste anything consumable but that doesn't mean he won't drink or eat it anyway, even if just for show. Enjoys people watching and could use a break from the latest apocalypse. Open to all, canon, crosscanon, etc. ~~Would love to toss him at Good Omens folks.]~~

(Mr. Fell owns a coffee shop, in that there is coffee in it and it is, theoretically, a shop. Good luck actually purchasing anything, though. Cash only. Odd hours. The Works. He has an impressive book collection, though, and if you get lucky, sometimes you can camp out there reading for a few hours before he notices you're there.)

[Aziraphale looks over the menu with some confusion. He'd heard that coffee shops had started selling more than just coffee, tea, or hot cocoa some years ago, but he'd never seen much evidence of it before. He orders a macchiato and a slice of coffee cake, and is more than a bit dismayed when he gets an enormous caramel concoction and not an espresso like he'd expected.]

Ah. So they've changed the definition. [He sounds more than a bit passive aggressive about it, too, though he knows better than to take it out on the barista.]

[Kariya is the local café's latest hire and most likely explanation for why your latte tastes funny this morning.

It's not his fault! He didn't even want to take this job, but he also hadn't wanted to ask his resident fake-space-alien/not-adoptive-father-figure for spending money.

How was he supposed to know how many different, weirdly precise ways people wanted their morning coffee? Watch him for a while, and you'll notice he's getting the hang of it quickly enough. When he's only focused on the equipment and his tickets, firmly in the zone, he even looks graceful. But there's so much to learn, and when the crowd of customers waiting starts to pile up he gets...edgy.

And that is why you got four shots layered under solid cappuccino foam, dosed with two pumps of straight mint syrup. Enjoy.]

[Honestly it's not even capitalism; it's oligopolies that will ultimately destroy the world.

But that can all be fought about once everyone arrives and takes over a corner of this too small space with too loud voices to match their too big ideas. That will probably also involve frank and aggressive discussions about how the cups of coffee even made it to their table, whether or not it's particularly good. If, apparently, it even gets there.]

[ While raindrops dot, slip and streak down the window, Mary's sits next to it at a table for two. She's peacefully drawing with her sketchbook spread open and the strap of an expensive camera lying across the corner of the page. She certainly looks like the type of person who would be found in a coffee shop, but if it were a regular thing, she'd have remembered to order a drink or some food. She didn't, so technically, she's loitering. In an approachable way, if she can help it. Today could be the day someone notices her art, if hope springs eternal. ]

[Someone just started working at WildKat? Or maybe he's waiting for his order. He seems to be a regular, one way or another.]

Adelia loved working at the Roost. Sure, it was the Hipsteriest of hipster coffee shops, but Shannon was an old friend, and let her kick people out if they tried to order something by the name -or fucked up sizing- of one of the Multinational Conglomerate's drinks. Which she didn't always, but did sometimes if they were dicks about it.

Their sizes were small, medium, large and 'finals' which a customer needed a valid current-semester student -or faculty- ID to purchase, and had so far as Adelia knew, never been a problem.

She also liked it because Shannon -nor any of the others- ever questioned why she occasionally came in with a black eye or a splint or as she was at the moment, with her arm in a sling. Shannon knew why, the others always just guessed, and while the guesses were never anywhere in the same vicinity as correct, she always just picked the one she liked best and claimed it as true and they all went up on the board next to the pickup counter. The current excuse was 'caber toss accident'.

[Uber perky grad student in computer science by day, white hat hacker by night. She's always in the booth by a plus with tons of computer gear.]

[If he's an employee it's probably cover for a case, but he's probably still good at it, because that's how he does things.
If he's a customer it could be anything, could be a little local place he hasn't told the team about because sometimes he needs to be away from them from an hour or two, it might be a safe place to meet a client, it might be he's casing the place for a job, it might be he's waiting out a suspect, there's many many options.]

[Chances are he's 'highly incognito' with his sunglasses and his ball cap and his highly defensible table in a corner where he can see all the exits.
Or maybe it's in the now-reversed post-snap five years, and it's a quiet place near his apartment with good coffee and fresh doughnuts where he can sit and do the crossword without getting interrupted.
Or maybe we're living in the 'everyone lives on their own floor of the tower' universe and it's the StarkBucks Cafe on the ground floor of the tower where he stops in every morning after his run.]

The only time anyone could remember the L&L being closed was when there had been a gas leak in the building next door, once when there was a blizzard advisory, and again when the entire street had been closed down due to a movie being shot there for the better part of a day.

Other than that the place was open 24/7, 365 days a year.

Angie usually worked graveyard shifts, because the worst they had to deal with then was the college students cramming for finals, the occasional group of stage-actors after a show or a rehearsal, and the long-haul truckers, and none of those groups of people caused anybody problems on purpose, not like the daytime customers did.

Are they people you like? People you want to talk to again after they accept the appallingly mediocre coffee I'm about to thrust upon you?

[ Except he's already reaching for the marker to write the names on the cups. It's almost like he's full of shit and says whatever he wants.

He taps the pen against the counter.] So is this the meeting of the seven dwarves or the seven samurai? I'd go with the latter, but if you all identify as dwarves I guess I can't stop you.
